In 1803, William Edward Parry entered the English Navy at the age of 13. After having spent the War of 1812-1814 on the east coast of North America, Parry's only remaining wish was to find the Northwest Passage. He made four voyages to the Arctic. On his second Arctic expedition Parry's two ships, the Fury and the Hecla, got caught in the ice. Unable to proceed the crew spent the winter in the region of Igloolik.
